Dancing was a very popular custom in the court life, and also in the villages. People liked dancing in different places and situations.
Dances were usually composed in pairs, being the first one a slow piece of binary character, and the second one a fast piece in a ternary rhythm. One of the most famous dance pairs was the combination of pavane and galliard.
- PAVANE: a slow dance with a binary rhythm.
- GALLIARD: a lively dance with a ternary rhythm.
The ballet was born in this period. It was considered an art in itself and was a kind of dance created for theatre.
